The theme for National Child Abuse Prevention Month 2016 is "Building Community, Building Hope". The Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) is committed to the work of preventing child abuse in North Carolina. We can all work together to build our communities and build hope by striving to assure great childhoods for all the children in our care.
Remember the old saying "It takes a village to raise a child"? This is so true! Communities play a crucial role in preventing child abuse and neglect and play a huge part in building hope in children and families. A nurturing, supportive community can provide the foundation needed for families to thrive.
Let's start now, working together to enrich all of our communities. No step forward is too small in developing the support and foundation that children need. Start by meeting your neighbors and participating in community events. From there, reach out and build relationships to support community needs by volunteering in schools, creating and participating in family support groups and sharing knowledge and resources. A strong community is a safe community for children to grow and learn.
DCDEE invites all child care providers to take step forward and share Governor McCrory's Proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention month in NC, and celebrate NC's commitment to child abuse prevention.
"Protecting children throughout North Carolina from abuse, neglect and other dangers is a top priority of my administration," said Governor McCrory. "Child abuse prevents too many children from reaching their full potential. This display will serve as a poignant reminder to do all we can to ensure every child has a strong community of support to help them pursue a long and happy life."
